In 2012, I returned to Sidmouth from an EU conference in Rotterdam with an invitation for Sidmouth and Sidmouth Drill Hall Hub to be part of an EU funded project called ‘TourFish’. The project was awarded €600,000 by the EU ERDF Interreg IVa ‘Thematic Cluster’ programme. This meant participants would be awarded 100% funding.
I offered Sidmouth Trawlers participation in TourFish and guidance through it, and they gained a considerable amount of funding, advice and support from the project. Sidmouth took part with partners in coastal towns in Holland, Belgium and France, as well as Hastings. The project was led by the University of Greenwich.
From TourFish came the examination of the fishing heritage of Sidmouth, which is now a large part of the selling point of Sidmouth for Sidmouth Town Council, and the annual Sidmouth Sea Fest event.
Sidmouth Drill Hall Hub worked with partners locally and in Europe on branding and merchandise opportunities to generate sustainable income and provide match financial commitments to grant funded programmes to support a vision to increase the number of projects that the organisation ran. The TourFish project looked at different forms of Responsible Tourism and Sustainable Development and how coastal towns might find new routes to create new forms of sustainable income faced with the decline in the inshore fishing industry. Hence Sea Fest.
Sidmouth Sea Fest is the outward example of what might happen in a redeveloped, open and functioning Drill Hall.
Sidmouth Sea Fest 2015
A massive thank you to everyone that made Sidmouth Sea Fest 2015 such a great success despite the horrendous weather. We had a fantastic weekend throughout with many people, around 2,000, joining us to celebrate all things in, on and from the sea.
